Czech Inn Grill

www.czechinngrill.com

Best Dining - Czech Inn GrillPassengers have discovered a new roadside grill offering Czech foods, steaks, fish and jerk chicken in Pease Bay, Bodden Town. The Czech Inn Grill, in the building once occupied by Chester’s Jerk and Fry Fish, is open Monday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm, and Sunday 11am-8pm. The owners, chef Jiri “George” Zitterbart, former head chef at Morgan’s Harbor and Grand Old House, and fiancée Dahema Baker, have spruced up the premises to create a more contemporary feel, offering diners a luxury, outside grill-style menu. George said, “You can come sit down, bring your own beer and enjoy the ambience while you order from the extensive menu”. New outdoor furniture, lighting and a contemporary bar-style food counter grace the space for a less formal dining experience. There is no inside dining since the whole building is a kitchen. Customers can also choose to dine out back, where there is a giant blackboard and chalk to keep children occupied. Table-style seating has also been added on the side to encourage a social atmosphere where customers can play games and be entertained by a local parrot. Chef George said diners will not be disappointed with the fresh snapper, wahoo and lobster dishes. True to its name, the Czech Inn Grill entrees have a European feel, though George has put a new twist on regional dishes like callaloo and jerk. Even fried chicken is prepared the European way. Guláš, a European beef and vegetable stew seasoned with paprika and other spices, comes with Czech-style dumplings. Delicious! The menu also offers a variety of burgers (blue cheese, lamb, barbecue) and salads (Greek, Caesar, house mixed, served with chicken or shrimp), sandwiches and brussel sprouts in broth, as well as pork belly and chicken wings. Prices are very affordable. “The most expensive dish we have is $18. We also offer fish fresh from the local ocean, not frozen,” said George. “We also have mussels and other types of seafood.” The quality of the food is outstanding and very fairly priced. There are different kinds of quiche – leek, ham and cheese, and spinach to name a few – as well as a soup of the day, salads, crêpes, sandwiches on freshly baked baguettes, paninis, croque-monsieur and other heartier fare. Of course it wouldn’t be a French bakery without coffee and espresso, and Petit Paris offers Nespresso, one of the most popular coffee systems in the world today. A New chocolate lover’s addition to this fabulous French bakery comes straight from the past! Belgian chocolate remains the gourmet standard by which all other chocolate confections are measured. Even the chocolate-savvy Swiss imported the basic recipe from Belgian and French chocolatiers. On that note, this month we bring you chocolates from Leonidas, probably the most famous gourmet chocolatier in Belgium. Despite their popularity abroad, Leonidas chocolates are difficult to find in the U.S. Crafted in creams, ganaches and pralines, Leonidas’ traditional individual chocolates have been made by chocolate artisans in Belgium for almost 100 years. With chocolate treats this good, you'll taste why the demand has been so high during the last century. Your precious supply from the Gourmet Chocolate of the Month Club will likely dwindle faster than you can say “Leonidas”! Petit Paris is open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5:45 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 5:30 pm. (345) 328-4000.

My passengers love their pizza even in the islands. It's a family favorite meal! They love this new Bordens Pizza Place! Not only for their pizza but they have great hush puppies as well. They give a 10% senior citizen discount and they are a local business. When I did some investigating I found out this awesome pizza place is a true Caymanian (best kept secret) with a lot of history behind it. After a hiatus of several years, local's are so excited by the re-opening of The Original Borden's Pizza in its new location at Trafalgar Place, West Bay Road. A family-owned business originally opened in 1970 by Mrs. June Borden, Borden's Pizza sold in the mid 1990's due to the ill health of its founder. The original location was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004; and the business is being re-opened by Ms. June's grandson-in-law Raymond Hydes and grand-daughter Tiffany Hydes. Their menu is in-place featuring all of Borden's Pizza's original family recipes. Enthusiastic former patrons of the original restaurant are already putting items like the Borden's Special pizza and the Hush Puppies on their social media culinary wish lists. "Our logo says it all," Tiffany said. "Our grandmother was the original founder of Borden's Pizza and we have all of her original recipes to share with all of her loyal customers once again." The logo for The Original Borden's Pizza features the smiling face of Ms. June along with the slogan: "A Caymanian tradition since 1970." The Original Borden's Pizza will focus initially on carry-out orders and will be open from 11am to 11pm from Monday through Thursday and on Saturday and Sunday. On Fridays, the restaurant will be open later -- from 11am to 1am. "There is counter seating at our new location, as well as outdoor café seating and we'll also be offering carry-out service. We'll be looking at offering delivery service in the future as we grow," Raymond said. (345) 949-3462.

South Coast Bar & Grill

www.southcoastbar.com

Best dining - South Coast Bar & Grill Talk about great local food and great prices! South Coast Bar and Grill is a passenger favorite! Many folks eat here several times a week for their fresh fish, caught right off the boat. With their comfortable ocean front sitting it's a fabulous spot to watch the sun go down! South Coast Bar & Grill is the successor of Reef Point Bar & Restaurant, which was founded by mother and son, Ventris and Charles Powell in December 1978. Ventris' love of cooking and magical touch with ingredients and Charles love for fishing was the perfect recipe for a coastal restaurant. His extensive knowledge of the waters from East End to Bodden Town and his great fisherman's luck led to an abundance of local fish. With more fish than the family could eat and a generous spirit, Ventris began preparing local dishes which Charles would share with his colleagues at work. In no time at all the demand for their food became so overwhelming that Reef Point Restaurant & Bar was born. After 26 years of serving locals and visitors alike the restaurant was completely destroyed by Hurricane Ivan on September 11, 2004. Today if you look out the window to the east, you can see the humble remains. This was a devastating loss for the whole family which by then included younger brother Tony and his wife, Licci, who had began managing the business since 1996. Tony and Licci, who are now the new owners of the restaurant, were determined to continue the family traditions of local foods in a friendly, seas side location. Two years after the storm, on December 29th 2006 the doors to a new establishment called South Coast Bar & Grill opened to locals and visitors. Today Ventris is retired but is still cooking at home and caters to the family restaurant. If you are ordering a local dish she may well have cooked it or it is her recipe that is used by the staff. Charles, while no longer active in the restaurant business still supplies his catches to the restaurant. It is still a family business now with Tony's daughters Darcie, Samantha, Kasey and Little Jizzel and son in-law Howard contributing toward the success of the restaurant. There is a sure chance you may see their family as you relax and enjoy their hospitality. (345) 947-2517.

Rackam's (George Town)

www.rackams.com

Best dining - Rackam'sRackam's Waterfront Bar and Grill has been a favorite hangout for both locals and tourists for many years. It's the place where you sit at the bar with a dive master on one side and an accountant on the other, all enjoying the same thing...world famous fish and chips, ice cold beers, signature cocktails and of course our entertaining, gorgeous and friendly staff. Rackam's is literally built right on the iron shore, jutting into the sea, so you can't get any closer to being on the water, and can't beat the views. You can snorkel off their ladder during the day to enjoy the wreck of the Cali, or swim with the tarpons, stay for an incredible sunset, then watch or participate in the feeding of the tarpon, every night at 7:30. West Bay Diner

Best Breakfast in West Bay! Great prices and local cuisine. The West Bay Diner just got their 7th excellent review for family friendly pricing and great food! This small and homey diner, owned and managed by Danny Lamarca, offers a no-frills, no-fuss menu, featuring nine options for all-day breakfast, fresh local delicacies and traditional diner staples. Passengers rave about the West Bay fries and fish and chips. This little diner has seven types of hot or cold sandwiches available. Many folks take their carry out to the beach! They have great fresh fish specials (served Cayman style, blackened, steamed, pan fried or grilled). Their daily specials include chicken curry, fish curry, chicken stir fry, 8-ounce steak dinner and local catch fish. The diner is easy to find, on the West Bay Road just past the four-way stop. With on-the-go snacks, lunch and dinner, the diner seats 34 guests indoors and 10 outside for those who want to catch some rays while enjoying their meal. True, the diner is not looking to compete with the island’s fine-dining establishments in terms of elaborate decor and artistic food; rather, it aims to fill a gap in the market for budget-priced meals, which offer hearty portions and great taste. Some folks pick appetizers, namely nachos and quesadillas for their main meal. Many folks love the crispy and satisfyingly crunchy nachos, topped with a mountain of cheese and onions plus a zesty salsa and sour cream. The chicken quesadillas, loaded with plenty of cheese, peppers, onions and chicken pieces and accompanied by a serving of French fries. This family friendly low priced diner guarantees big portions and quality local food. Open 8:00 am -10:00 pm. (345) 946-8000

XQ's

My Passengers love XQ's for their great pizzas, affordable food and friendly, outstanding service. XQ's on Seven Mile is a contemporary yet unpretentious restaurant and lounge serving casual food without compromising on quality. Having imported a bona fide wood oven and Pizza Chef both from Italy, no corners have been cut to bring you that authentic taste: exceptional wholesome dishes and nothing but the freshest fish and the best Pizza on the rock. While the four main pillars of the menu are Pizza, Grill, Pasta and Salad, the XQ's crew is flexible to your desires. Some of the XQ's signature dishes include the No XQ's Burger prepared with fresh Certified Angus Beef. Another specialty is the Sausage Fiesta; using locally made sausages consisting of various flavors. The Brick Oven Snapper is also one to impress. Best dining - Norma Jean's BBQ and Her Dad Chef John!“Is a must do” quotes a frequent flyer! She sets up on Thu, Fri, Sat at the West Bay Public Dock. Wonderful, wonderful BBQ! Several folks drive from all over just to get this family’s BBQ!! Her dad is the famous Chef John who sets up his BBQ at seven mile public beach. Chef John is locating his BBQ center in Bodden Town on Thursdays and Saturdays. Hope to get more details. This Cayman restaurant was my first introduction to the local cuisine. This isn't strictly Caymanian food, but it is Caymanian owned and operated. They basically have barbecued chicken and ribs served on a bed of beans and rice. The barbecue sauce is great; I like it mixed a little with the beans and rice.

Borden's Pizza

Petit Paris

Best Dining - Petit Paris At “Petit Paris” you will find a selection of sandwiches, gourmet salad, pastries, bread, quiche, soups and many more products prepared on a daily basis. Camana Bay now has some French flair to celebrate on the cresent. Petit Paris, an authentic French-style bakery with an interior featuring a rustic wood-and-brick theme, opened in December, much to the delight of those who work at or visit Camana Bay. Many passengers love l their macaroons made fresh daily. Folks love to drop by purchase a fresh sandwich and a French pastry then go out enjoy and people watch in the center of Camana Bay. Owner Bruno Deluche, a mainstay in Grand Cayman’s culinary scene for more than a decade, says Petit Paris is inspired by the bakeries he visited as a child in his hometown of Limoges, France. He says he has wanted to open a bakery in Cayman for a long time. Petit Paris offers the kinds of baked goods you’ll find in any French bakery: fresh breads, flaky croissants, delicious pastries, macaroons and cookies, and decadent cakes. In addition, it has pre-packaged sweets like nougat, bonbons, hard candies and biscuits, all imported from France. In true French bakery fashion, Petit Paris offers many savory items as well.
