Indepth Water Sports

www.indepthwatersports.com

Indepth Water Sports When it comes to Cayman Islands diving, my passengers who insist on a full valet experience love Indepth Water Sports in West Bay. They set up gear, break it down, pick you up for a stress free diving experience. Nat and Art are so knowledgeable and Nick is excellent. There is no boat like their's - a former Navy Seals RIB transformed into a custom built dive boat that can take you to any dive site - fast. Overnight diving excursions to the Sister Islands, North Wall dive-lunch-dive trips to Kaibo and East End safari's are only a few of the possibilities. Their staff of highly qualified instructors and instructor trainers is certified for multiple agencies and they love providing advice or training for all levels of divers, giving you as much or as little attention as you desire. Nat is a highly qualified CCR/rebreather diver. If you are a tech diver or want to get into tech diving, Nat's your man, and InDepth's your operation. Because the boat is fast, they can dive on the west side OR the north side, depending on weather and chop conditions. Many passengers have shared with me that dive operators kind of pick one side or the other, because it costs too much in fuel and time spent to drive their boats from one side to the other. Call (866) 476-2195

Eden Rock Diving Center

www.edenrockdive.com

Eden Rock Diving Center One of my passenger's favorite shore diving spots and snorkel picks!  Eden Rock Diving Center is the gateway to the main attraction situated only a short swim from two of the world’s best shallow reefs Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto.  Follow the gently sloping bottom out until you see the coral reefs rise to within a few feet of the surface then drop 40 feet vertically to a sandy bottom.  Both Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto are honey combed with caves, tunnels and Grottos inhabited by many tropical fish, coral and sponges including Silversides and Tarpon.  Devil’s Grotto, when the Silversides fill it, is one of my all-time favorite dives!  Passengers love the easy entry into the ocean by ladder where they can enjoy two great reefs Eden Rocks and the famous Devil's Grotto.  They have a large stock of Mask/Fins/Snorkels and Snorkeling Vests available in Childs and adult sizes for sale or rent.  Lockers are also available for rent at reasonable prices.  Guide dives leave from our Scuba Diving Center at 9:00 am 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.  Allow one and a half hours for a one tank dive and 3 hours for a two tank dive.  The entry is down a diving ladder into 4 feet of water, then swim out to the reefs which are close by.  See the best of Eden Rock or Devil's Grotto:

Cayman Marine Lab

www.caymanmarinelab.com

Cayman Marine Lab Passenger's love Tom and his team. They bring so much understanding of the eco system to the table. Established in 1986, Cayman Marine Lab caters to folks interested in a smaller eco-diving experience. Their equipment is new and well-maintained because they do virtually everything themselves. CML will run with as few as 2 or as many as 10 divers. The atmosphere is very informal, and the only thing more fun than the dives are the mini-lessons given between dives. Their most important asset is experience. They’re old for dive masters which means they know the local waters, how weather affects each spot, and how to make the right decisions so that all will have a safe and enjoyable adventure. Cayman Marine Lab is the only marine eco-tourism operation in the entire Caribbean run by a "real" marine biologist. CML director, Tom Byrnes was lured away from a faculty position with Hofstra University in New York after just one visit to the Cayman Islands. Although well-traveled in the Caribbean, most of Tom's research and publications are from studies carried out in the Indo-Pacific. After a six year stint in Australia, Tom became somewhat disillusioned with research because it requires one to be extremely specialized eventually becoming the "worlds authority" on something only 100 people care about. He wanted to help fill a void in the diving industry. Many folks will only dive with Tom and his expert team. Have fun, dive and grow in knowledge! (345) 916-0849.

Each of these variables can and will affect your diving experience so we will try to give you the highlights and allow you to pick the location that suits your needs:

Is considered by divers to be the best of the best walls to dive. The Cayman North Wall runs parallel to the north shore and offers drops from around 40 feet down to depths greater than 6,000 feet. Along this wall you will find many different types of hard and soft corals along with plenty of overhangs and swim-through for your exploration enjoyment. Diving in this area is the best during the summer months when conditions produce a calmer sea.

The Cayman West Wall:

Is located from North West Point to George town is the most dived area in the Cayman Islands. Conditions for diving in this area are good all year round. Wreck diving in this area include the Wreck of the Oro Verde and the Kittiwake. This area also has some spectacular wall and reef dives as well as some great shore dives to include Turtle Reef, Edens Rock and Devils Grotto.

The Cayman South Wall:

Is located along the south coast is mostly dived during the winter months. The walls in this area are typically deeper than the others and offer amazing canyons, swim-throughs and overhangs. The South Wall is where a lot of experienced divers and photographers love to dive. This area is defined by a huge barrier reef that breaks the surface and serves as a coral fence. Conditions here are more demanding!

The Cayman East Wall:

Offers the diver the most remote and unspoiled diving found anywhere in the Cayman Islands and is often referred to as the Last Frontier. Since this area is more remote you will find this area less crowded. This dive area offers a mix of walls and drop offs starting at about 45 feet. Visibility ranges from 100 to 150 feet and reefs are very healthy here. Water temp averages 82 degrees F.

Passenger’s Favorite Dive Sites:

The Kittiwake:

KittiwakeThis newest dive excursion located at Northwest Point is a 250 foot decommissioned US Naval ship that was sunk just this past January, 2011 for your diving and snorkeling enjoyment. Since the wreck rests in 64 feet deep waters divers are able to explore the interior chambers, and since the smoke stack will be visible at 15 feet this site will also be an ideal spot for snorkelers. This site is only accessible by boat so make sure to check with your dive operator for more information.

Stingray City:

One of the shallowest dives in the Grand Caymans, at a depth of only 12 feet, divers will find themselves quickly surrounded by hundreds of hungry stingrays waiting to be fed and interacted with. Stingray City is one of the most popular tourist attractions so be prepared for a crowd but it is well worth the experience.

Trinity Caves:

Trinity Caves located off the north end of 7 mile Beach has a maze of canyon trails between 60 and 100 feet. The reef has the most magnificent barrel sponges, black coral, towering sea whips.

Penny’s Arch:

Pennys Arch is a nice shallow site (30ft) noted for the Purple Sea Fans and is located on the north right hand side of Rum Point cut.

Anchor point/East side wall:

Is about 60 feet and offers an awesome swim through. It usually houses a curious, huge green moray eel.

Oro Verde:

The Oro Verde was intentionally sunk off the coast of seven mile beach to become an artificial reef. The dive site it approximately 50 feet deep and is popular with most dive operators so make sure to ask if you think this is something you may be interested in doing.

Orange Canyon:

Orange Canyon is located north of the Trinity Caves and boasts lavender sea fan turtles and small octopi.

Big Tunnels:

This dive site is located north of Seven Mile Beach and has a 50 foot coral archway.

The Wreck of the Balboa:

This dive is of a 375 foot freighter aquarium where most species of fish are spotted.

Grand Canyon:

This dive site is an enormous channel enclosed by jagged mountains off Rum Point.

Best Shore Dives:

Here is a list of some of our passengers favorite shore dives:

  • Turtle Farm
  • Cobalt Resort
  • Eden Rock
  • Dive Tech
  • Smiths Cove Beach Park (No dive shop on grounds)

Sunset Villa is the best area but is quite a few kicks from the shore, so head out towards the buoys (but not past).

Near Cemetery reef is just north of George Town: Don Fosters dive shop on North Church St. and Calico Jacks - both are the best entry points to see the wreck of the Cali.

Other good locations include just off Bob Sotos Scuba Center at the Lobster Pot restaurant and Turtle Reef, just north of the Turtle Farm at Northwest Point.

The Wreck of the Cali:

Wreck sites aren't just for scuba divers. Just a short swim from George Town's shores you will find the wreck of the Cali, sitting in shallow water and an easy snorkeling adventure. The wreck rests in 6m (20 ft.) of calm waters about 30m (98 ft.) offshore. Built in 1944, the Cali was a 66m (217-ft.) masted schooner that was labeled as a shipping hazard in 1957. It was blown up by the British Corps of Army Engineers and has since been a popular snorkeling site.

Seven Mile Beach & Cemetery Beach:

Many snorkelers staying on Grand Cayman snorkel off Seven Mile Beach because it's so convenient to many of the resorts and rented villas and condos, and colorful reefs lie right offshore. The snorkeling near the Marriott and Westin resorts is excellent. To the north, Cemetery Reef and its public beach are good spots for underwater exploration. At Cemetery Reef we've seen shoals of parrotfish and sergeant majors and even the elusive reef shark.

Devil's Grotto:

Just south of Eden Rock, this popular Grand Cayman snorkeling site is a mere 45m (148 ft.) off Parrot's Landing Rock. You can wind through a series of long and intricate tunnels here. The fun begins at a depth of 3m (10 ft.). Tarpon are often seen at rest during daylight hours.

Cheeseburger or Soto's reef is another George Town snorkeling site.

It's famous for Tarpon, a silver predator that lives off the brightly colored fish we go miles to see, and also for its colorful coral. Like Eden Rock/Devil's Grotto, it also has caves and tunnels to explore.

Old Man Bay, at Northside

Eden Rock

Surprisingly, there are a number of good places right around George Town harbor. Eden Rock is one. It's ideal for beginners - being only a few yards off-shore from the Paradise Bar & Grill.

Cayman Sea Elements Mangrove and Sea grass Tour

www.caymanseaelements.com

cayman sea elements Sea Elements offers a selection of tours giving an exceptional opportunity for a unique adventure into Cayman’s beautiful mangrove forests. Learn about this important ecosystem and experience firsthand the mangrove forest on either boat, kayak or one of their guided Mangrove and Sea grass snorkel tours. Many of my passengers enjoyed the mangrove forest never seen in a beach setting. These tours through the mangrove forest allow you to glide above the ecosystem and enjoy the sounds of nature. You will encounter Cayman’s wildlife in their natural habitat, observing coastal birds, fish, green iguanas, orange sponges, anemones and even pet a jellyfish along the way. An experienced guide is there to inform and answer any questions. Discover what makes this extraordinary forest so amazing! While most of us know something about the ocean and coral reefs, we know little about mangrove forests and seagrass beds. Orange sponges, sea squirts, and anemones cover the mangrove roots and small fish are abundant under the trees and in the grass. (345) 945-7525.

He limits the number of people on his boat to 10 so he is always foucused on personal service and attention. The tour includes a trip to the mangroves, Starfish Point, Stingray City. Paul also has some eveing sails and folks can charter some day trips if they wish. 1 (345) 938 3303 Or +1 (345) 943 3300

Hiking

Mastic Trail

www.nationaltrust.org.ky/info/mastic.html

The Mastic Trail hike is a great experience and ranks as the highlight of all of my nature lover’s outdoor experiences. The three-hour hike (with my passengers favorite trail guide Stuart Mailer) is a must do! He will take you through the undisturbed interior of wetland and dry forest that is often overlooked from the beaches. The overwhelming abundance of trees, butterflies, parrots, woodpeckers, lizards, and frogs is astonishing, and the expert commentary, including bird calls, by the guide himself is incredible. Although the terrain is rugged in places, you can walk a reasonable pace with many stops to look at plants and animals and to take photographs. Wear comfortable shoes, insect repellant because the trail itself is largely shaded.
