by Stephen Clarke, Cayman Compass www.caymancompass.com

For the first time ever, Monster Media brings two of its biggest annual events together for a spectacular show: Million Dollar Run and Jet Around Cayman.

They will both be held over the Constitution Day weekend from 29 June through 1 July, and promise to be extraordinary displays of fast boats and powerful engines.

For more information on both races, full schedules and locations, you can check the following websites: www.MDR.ky www.jac.com.ky

Jet Around Cayman

Celebrating its 17th year, Jet Around Cayman will be held on Saturday, 29 June. Jet Around Cayman is an endurance jet ski race around the entire island of Grand Cayman.

Race festivities are scheduled throughout the day, and the big race begins at 1:00pm. Participants will mount their beasts, preparing to do battle on the open sea. Monster Media executive Kenny Rankin says: "We are pleased to announce the participation of two world class racers in this year's Jet Around Cayman: Chris Macclugage and Ryan Hardwick."

Chris Macclugage is a veteran pioneer in the sport of Jet Ski/Personal Water Craft (PWC) racing, and has been competing since the early 1990s. He is a 13-time World Champion and National Champion, and a three-time Thailand Kings Cup Champion. He has also been Japanese Champion and European Indoor Champion twice, as well as Offshore Guadeloupe Champion. These impressive accomplishments join a large collection of other trophies.

Ryan Hardwick, originally from Atlanta, Georgia, has been riding for more than 20 years and his wins include 2011 National and World Runner-Up Pro Runabout Stock and 2010 APBA Watercross Nationals 1st Place Overall Pro Runabout Stock. His nickname is "Flyin Ryan", for reasons that will probably become obvious when he hits the water for Jet Around Cayman.

Million Dollar Run

Monday, 1 July, is the official race day for the Million Dollar Run 2013. As in previous years, the race will consist of three boat classes in an effort to broaden the range of those wishing to participate and compete in what is sure to be an exciting match of skills and daring.

Classes:

  • • Pleasure Class is a class for fishermen style/leisure boats and new captains who would like to get involved in the event.
  • • Circuit Class is open to experienced captains and medium performance crafts.
  • • Offshore Class is designed for the most experienced captains and high performance crafts.

The route

Featuring an exciting rolling start, the race route starts from the Marriott Beach Resort area approximately 300 yards offshore and crafts hit their stride along the heart of Seven Mile Beach.

They then head west towards Public Beach, continuing to North West Point before making a turn and heading back south towards Thompson Mooring in George Town. The last sharp turn is made here followed by a race back to complete the route.

For the poker run element of the race, "cards" are chosen randomly before, during and after the race to form a full, five-card hand for each captain at the race's conclusion.

This is destined to be an extremely fun-filled, exciting weekend and you'll want to get there early to get a good spot on the beach. There's nothing better than fast boats racing across clear blue seas on a warm summer day.
